What is cupping? Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that involves placing cups onto the skin to create suction, which facilitates healing with increased blood flow. This can relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It can also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. People use cupping to quickly relieve a host of ailments and conditions, with minimal discomfort. Tense muscles can be softened quickly and easily with cupping therapy, therefore it is a wonderfully effective addition to a massage at Life’s Retreat Massage and Spa.
During a treatment, a clear cup is suctioned onto the skin. The therapist uses a special pump to create the suction, versus the more traditional (and ancient) heat / fire methods. The air inside the cup is removed by a created vacuum to draw the skin and muscle upward into the cup. Your skin may turn red as the blood vessels respond to the change in pressure, indicating that circulation has been brought to the surface. The cups stay in place for a set time; usually between 5 and 10 minutes, and sometimes longer. Once they are removed, you may see that the treated areas have skin discoloration, usually dissipating anywhere between a few hours and a few days of the session.
